Whoever said summer was the best season in Newport never visited during the fall. As summer has now come to an end and crisp air rolls into Newport many visitors and seasonal residents pack their bags and leave for warmer destinations. Even though hot beach and boating days may be behind us, most of our favorite Newport activities (and more!) can be enjoyed during the fall. As Newport locals, the fall has become our favorite season of the year and we hope to convince you of this as well. We've decided to break this down with 5 major points.

  1. No more "Newport Parking Lot"

The first noticeable difference between the height of the summer and cooler fall days is the smaller crowds. Thames Street and America's Cup are no longer jammed packed with cars, resembling one of the many city parking lots. Getting a dinner reservation at a reasonable time of night is also possible. Although we are again missing the sight of the impressive cruise ships out in the harbor, the lack of cruise ship passengers this year will also decrease the crowds for the rest of us land dwellers.

2. The Beach!

Even with the heat of the summer behind us, relaxing on the beach during a warm, sunny fall day or going for a nice morning walk along the sand can still be enjoyed. In September the water is the warmest of all season and will be refreshing on a warm day.

3. Apple Trees, Corn Mazes and Pumpkin Patches

These typical New England fall activities can only be enjoyed for a few weeks a year! You can enjoy apple picking at Sweet Berry Farm or get lost in Escobar Farm's corn maze. The Trinity Church pumpkin patch is also a highlight of the season!

4. Brews, Brews and Flannels

Fall is time for pumpkin beers with cinnamon sugar rims. Spend a beautiful fall afternoon at Taproot Brewery at Newport Vineyards where you can sample both their beers and wines while having delicious appetizers. Or try Rejects Beer Company to sample their new Fest Bier. If coffee is your drink of choice, try out the Pumpkin Pie latte at Empire Tea and Coffee for a delicious, warm treat.

5. Ghost Walks

If you enjoy history and spooky stories, try the Newport Ghost Tours. On this tour, you will be led on a lantern lit walk through the quaint colonial streets of Newport and hear tales about the past. The tour is great for ghost hunters all ages and lasts about 90 minutes. Be careful not to upset any spirits.
